The primary objectives of these studies were to evaluate the effectiveness of the Agro-Sciences, Inc., Automatic Seed Analyzer (ASA-610) for predicting the germination of soybean seed lots and for detecting and monitoring deterioration of the seed. Ina comparison of predicted germination (PG) and standard germination (SG) percentages for 101 lots of soybean seed, PG was within + ou - 10% of SG for slightly over 60% of the lots. Since over and under-estimates of SG occurred with about equal frequency, use of the ASA-610 for assessing the quality of inconing soybean seed lots would result-on the average - in acceptance of lots of unacceptable quality, or discard of lots with acceptable quality in four out of every 10 cases. Conditioning the seed lots by various methods to increase seed moisture content to 13 +% generally increased the PG percentage but did not improve its accuracy in predicting SG unless the PG of non-conditioned seed underestimated SG. In cases where PG overestimated SG, conditioning of the seed before analysis with the ASA-610 substantially decreased the accuracy of the PG percentage; The ASA-610 was generally most accurate in predicting the germination of high quality seed lots, i. e., lots with SG percentagens above 90%. It was least accurate in predicting the germination of lots with SG below 80%. Use of the ASA-610 to detect and monitor the progress of seed deterioration produced much more meaningful and consistent results. The progress of deterioration resulting from different periods of field weathering and accelerated aging was reflected in increasing current flow values of the seed steep water. This was most evident when the current flow values for the individual seeds in a lot were plotted as a population conductivity profile.
